The importance of Dairy protein

Directly from birth, piglets are genetically programmed to optimally digest all nutrients that are present in milk. Dairy ingredients are just like sow milk packed with the right nutrients, which are very palatable and easy to digest. They support feed intake and the development of a healthy gut and immune system. Leading to improved performance, lower mortality, and profitable piglet rearing. One of these essential nutrients present in dairy ingredients is dairy protein.

Dairy powder

Dairy protein has superior digestibility and doesn’t contain anti-nutritional factors (ANFs). Resulting in a lower risk of non-digested protein present in the hindgut of the young piglet which can lead to health problems, like diarrhea. In addition, dairy protein contains all essential amino acids in the optimal profile. Amino acids provide the building blocks needed by the animal to produce its own body proteins which are necessary for all kinds of important functions in the animal body and growth. Therefore the presence of dairy protein in piglet diets is essential.

Superior digestibility

Dairy proteins have superior digestibility compared to other protein sources. Already from birth onwards, piglets are able to (almost) fully digest dairy protein (≥ 95% digestibility). The digestibility of other protein sources by the young animal body, next to dairy will eventually also increase but this will happen over time. This delayed increase in digestibility is linked to the increase of the protein digestive enzyme in the animal body. This makes dairy protein a very important nutritional protein source for young animal nutrition.

Piglets creepfeed

All essential amino acids in the optimal profile

The amino acid profile of dairy protein provides, compared to other protein sources all the essential amino acids in a balanced ratio.

Why is this important?

During digestion, proteins present in the feed are broken down into individual amino acids. Amino acids provide the building blocks needed by the animal to produce its own body proteins. To build body protein the animal selects the right amino acids. Which amino acids the animal body needs to select is given by the genetic DNA code of the animal. The animal forms a chain of the selected amino acids and ranks them in a specific order. This specific order differs and depends on where the body protein is needed for. If an amino acid is not available when it is required to make the chain in that specific order, the animal body stops the build of this body protein, regardless of the availability of other essential or non-essential amino acids. Thus, the amino acid that was unavailable is now the limiting amino acid to finalize the chain. The limiting amino acid reduces the utilization of other amino acids as these remaining amino acids will be used as an energy source and not as building blocks. As a result, this will reduce animal performance as the body proteins will not be formed.

burning limiting amino acids

The barrel shows the availability of essential amino acids in the animal body. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid. Regardless of the availability of the other essential amino acids, the amino acids above the white line will be used as an energy source instead of a building block to produce body proteins.

Non-essential amino acids cannot be limiting amino acids because the animal body manufactures them as they are needed. Essential amino acids can be limiting amino acids and therefore it is important that the right amount is supplied in the diet of the animal.

Lactose in piglet diets, essential

Lactose is an important sugar for young piglets, as it is the main sugar in sows milk and an important energy source for suckling piglets. Sow milk contains around 21% of lactose on a dry matter basis. Newborn piglets have the digestive capability to fully digest lactose directly after birth due to the presence of the digestive enzyme lactase. In this way, Lactose is a crucial nutrient in a piglet feed formulation as it is a palatable and easily digestible energy source that optimally supports the growth and development of piglets during the suckling phase and weaning. An ideal source to also ease the transition from sows milk or milk replacer to solid feed.

In addition, lactose also plays a role in improving the gastro intestinal health of the piglet as it can induce the growth of beneficial intestinal microflora, like lactobacilli. In this way, lactose can contribute to limiting the colonization of potential pathogens such as E. coli, Clostridium or Salmonella.

Pellet quality

From literature, it is known that lactose can have a negative effect on pellet quality, especially pellet hardness. Hard pellets have a negative influence on the feed intake of piglets. However, the source of lactose has a large influence on pellet hardness and quality. That is why Nutrifeed has performed a trial in cooperation with a feed mill to take a closer look at the influence of different lactose sources and different lactose levels on pellet quality.

The most important factor is the drying process, if lactose doesn’t fully crystallize it will attract water (hygroscopic) and the product will become harder. Lots of whey and permeate products on the market will have hygroscopic properties and will show lumping and caking in feed production, but will also result in harder pellets.

For the Serolat lactose products only carefully dried ingredients are used, which don’t attract water (A-hygroscopic). This has large benefits on product characteristics in production (no lumping or caking), but also results in better pellet quality. Pellet hardness and grid decreased significantly resulting in less spillage during production and a higher feed intake by the piglets.

The importance of homogenized spray dried fat

It is important that the creep feed and weaner diet of a piglet are formulated not only on metabolic energy (ME) but that fat quality and fat dispersion are also taken into account. Most piglet diets are based on mechanical fat, a liquid fat that is sprayed on the feed. This fat is coarse (50micron) and difficult to digest, because it has to be ‘homogenized’ or ‘pre-digested’ by the piglet into smaller fat particles before the piglet can profit from the energy.

Right after weaning piglets lack the right tools to digest and absorb fat easily: the production of bile salts in the digestive tract that emulsifies fat particles into smaller particles is low and the lipase secretion falls back after weaning. Therefore the presence of homogenized spray dried fat in piglet diets is essential.

Homogenization and spray drying has the following benefits:

  • 1 large fat globule is dispersed into many fine fat globules
  • These small fat particles are easier digested by piglets
  • Maximum energy efficiency; maximum level of the ingested energy will be used for maintenance and growth
  • The milk protein that encapsulates the fat works as an emulsifier
  • The milk protein protects the fat against oxidation and rancidity
  • The fine fat globules remain stable for a long shelf-life

Figure. homogenization of a large fat droplet into many fine fat droplets.

Table. The particle size of different fat sources.

Small particle size

Particle sizes of different fat sources are determined with a Malvern analysis, which gives insight into the characteristics of fat globules (in a logarithmic scale). In the homogenized spray dried fat product particle sizes of on average 1 micron were shown, which is even smaller than the fat globules found in sow milk (average 5 microns). The mechanical fat product contains large fat globules with a diameter of on average 50 microns, this means the particle is 65.000 times larger than spray dried fat particles and therefore more difficult for piglets to digest.

The best combination of dairy and high quality vegetable nutrients

Prelac contains carefully selected high quality vegetable ingredients in combination with own controlled dairy sources. The combination brings a product that brings the piglet a high nutritional product and in addition the best physical powder characteristics (non-hygroscopic, non-caking, free-flowing, and dust-free).

Vegetable protein, particle size matters

From research and literature is known that the reduction of particle size has a great impact on feed efficiency. By decreasing the particle size a larger surface area is created for digestive enzymes to react with the vegetable proteins, improving the digestibility of the nutrients present. This also results in a lower risk of non-digested protein present in the hindgut of the young piglet which can lead to health problems, like diarrhea.

For optimal digestion, Prelac contains only vegetable proteins containing small particles. In this way Prelac can easily replace coarse soybean meal (digestibility 70-75%), improving the protein and digestibility (± 85% digestibility) content of the total formulation and improving piglet performance.

In combination with the goodness coming from dairy like lactose, bringing a palatable and easily digestible energy source is Prelac an ideal high-quality ingredient to be used in formulations for the weaning and rearing phase.
